The NFL Draft continues to grow into this huge event through a lot of different media avenues. The MLB and NHL are the least watched professional sports drafts. The NFL has built this 3-day event up and has turned it into Mel Kiper's Christmas. Scouts and teams continue to search for the sleeper late round pick like Tom Brady. There are thousands of mock drafts released until the actual draft day. An actual draft grade for teams is truly premature because there is always the diamond in the rough and many busts.
Biggest surprise- Tim Tebow; the second quarterback off the board after Sam Bradford. People question Tebows mechanics and ability to compete at the NFL level. Tebow is a known winner from his college days at Florida and works really hard, which was seen in his pre-draft workouts. Jimmy Clausen and Colt McCoy definitely could have been taken before Tebow. Teams were scared off by McCoy injury he suffered during BCS bowl game. Clausen ended up getting picked up 48th by the Carolina Panthers, which could turn out to be a steal.
Bust or not? - The Giants are an organization known for good drafting in recent years with Jerry Reese. This was a very unbalanced draft for them as they selected 5 players on defense, 1 offensive line, and one special teams player (a punter). For the first time in 17 years, the Giants have not taken an offensive skilled player. Obviously there are teams whose defenses' struggled throughout the season and needed to make improvements. They are only two years removed from a super bowl championship, but have lost many key players including Antonio Pierce at middle line backer. Many thought this is an area they would address in the draft. Reese held off until the 4th round to select Dillard who may or may not succeed. Although the Oakland Raiders snagged stud middle line backer Rolando McClain, the Giants could have had a better value pick then Jason Pierre-Paul (JPP). This is the biggest hit or miss of the first round. He has potential to be 12-sack guy because he is a freakish athlete but skeptics are worried about his experience in smaller D1 School.JPP did 15 back flips in a row. Reese is good at finding talent but well see how this plays out?
Best draft- Seahawks grabbed some big names off the board with two first round picks: Russell Okung an OT and Earl Thomas a safety. This fills a lot of their teams needs and they filled another one in the second round taking Golden Tate a wide receiver from Notre Dame. I do not remember the last time a rebuilding team was able to totally revamp their roster like the Seahawks have in this draft. Easily the best performance of any other team.Lets not forget the addition of Pete Carroll and what he brings to the table.
Worst Draft- Jacksonville Jaguars get this award. For a team that needs to fill seats, they certainly didn’t draft that way. At least they helped their defense, I guess. They reached for Tyson Alualu with the 10th pick of the draft. They didn’t address their team needs at free safety, center and quarterback. They didn’t select a running back until the 6th round to complement Maurice Jones- Drew with a powerful running back.
